it'd be fun to try some 45 cal hornady xtp hollow point pistol bullets, (heaviest ones you can find), at LEAST twice the normal pistol velocity in that bad whamma-jamma. might be able to find a little hair and red mist left from whatever you shot.

I don't think that would work very well...
Hornady 45 caliber XTP bullets are all .452" where as 45-70 cartridge uses .458" jacketed bullets... or .459" or .460" cast bullets.
you might be right a quick check on reloadersnest.com didn't show any diameters of the bullets. guess you are STUCK with 250-550gr wt's with severall hollow points in the 250-300gr wt range, 1 example a hornnady 300 gr hollow point with 60 grs of reloadet 7 powder for 2443 fps in a 22" bbl for a mere 3974 foot/pounds of energy. guess that will work too.
