So how does the .44mag compare to the 45-70 or should I start another thread for that?

like a spitball vs a cannonball. the 45-70 can be 1,000 fps faster depending on bullet wt, load and bbl length.

There is a big difference but not huge when you look at just standard factory ammo.

These are just general rounded numbers but you can get an idea...

For 44 mag you are looking at 240gr @ 1,600 fps out of a rifle.
For 45-70 you are looking at 405gr @1,350 fps or 300gr @ 1,650 fps out of rifle.

The real difference is when you look at what you can do handloading you ammo.
For 44 mag you top out at about 325gr @ 1,500 fps
For 45-70 you top out at about 500gr @ 1,850 fps

BTW Factory 458 Winchester Magnum load is about 500gr @ 2,050 fps. People hunt elephants and cape buffalos with 45-70.

So I agreed to a deal on a Marlin 1895g in 45-70 with a Burris Timberline scope 3x9x32mm with ballistic reticle. He is throwing in some ammo on top. Meeting up on Sunday and will post some pics once I get it. Thanks for everyone's help and opinion on the rifle and caliber.
