anyone have an idea, or estimate about how much edible meat you will get per pound of live hog. I was a little surprized how little it was, however it was my first, and did not use the ribs and trimmed alot of fat and as much sinew as possible, and gave alot of the scraps to the dogs ( after cooking it first ). I mean after losing the head, skin, feet, guts, bones and I did not eat the heart or liver ( should have saved that for the dogs )whats left. mine weighed 94 lbs as I recall and I didn't weigh the meat but would estimate about 20 lbs? if lucky
You should be able to get 40% of pure meat per body weight(deer or hog). So a 100 pound animal will yield 40lbs of meat.
Best I ever did was a 103 pound doe last year, I got 45 pounds of meat. And that is scraping the bones down to nothing.
Edit****
A hog is a bit less due to the weight of the hide and head. Sorry I realized that after I posted
On a healthy hog (boned out except the ribs), 25% without ribs , about 30% with ribs. So I'd say about 27 pounds of meat. But every hog is different. For example that last large hog I shot only had 16 pounds of meat -one front shoulder and neck meat.
You get less off of a big boar because of their shield compared to a sow. And I've shot some sows that were nothing but bone racks that should have never been shot.
