Savage model 110 in 30-06 is a great rifle.

I've owned a couple of Savage rifles over the past few years. The 110 and its derivatives (11, 12, 16 etc) are easily customizable. You can rebarrel them yourself with a special wrench, no need to send them to a gunsmith. Tons of aftermarket parts (stocks, triggers etc). I do not believe you can get many after market parts for the Axis model since it is new. The Stevens 200, however, is basically the same rifle, it is cheap, and highly sought after by many Savage tinkerers because parts are interchangeable with the 110 model. One of my rifles (customized with a McGowen barrel, a custom glass bedded stock and custom Sharp Shooter trigger), will place 5 shots inside .330 at 100 yds. Am sure it will do better with a better shooter than me. If you visit http://www.savageshooters.com you can get tons of info and meet a bunch of great people.

As long as you can deal with a barrel nut and clunky action most of them shoot ok in my experience.

Love my 110. feels like shooting a pellit rifel. Well at least when a hog or deer steps out.
