first let me apologise again for my midol moment. second me and none of my relatives were involved in the civil war, it was a long time ago are you guys ever gonna move past it? and yes I agree the south had great leaders, better shots, less supplies and #'s of troops. and the union had several generals that were pussies and should have been able to win allot sooner had they pressed harder at certain key battles and followed thru instead of sitting idle allot of time. if it weren't for gettysburg it could have gone the other way, but regardless it's old news and like talking about the holocaust accomplishes nothing. I don't understand or appreciate the hard feelings harbored towards Yankees, I never fought in the civil war and you never owned a slave. and I'd dare say most of the people in this state and site now are from somewhere up north and if it weren't for a yankee we wouldn't be talking here on this forum right now. as for dishing it out, guilty as charged, but just felt i have had several inappropriate responses particularly from you oyster and expected better treatment from a mod. guess I was a bit too sensitive at the moment.
OK, let's not make this a Civil War debate, that's not what my "Yankee" reference was about. It was about the pet-peeve many of us natives have with people who move here from up north (who are generally known as "Yankees"), and then proceed to tell us how great it was up north and why don't we do things down here like they did up there. It was meant to be light-hearted, not mean-spirited or to make anyone feel unwelcome, and if came across that way, I apologize. When reading something you don't always get the intended meaning due to lack of body language, inflection, etc. that you have when speaking directly. It's very easy to take things the wrong way, especially if it hits you at the wrong time. It's not the first time I've posted something that could have been better worded or used a few more smilies, and probably won't be the last. Y'all should see all the stuff I start to post and then delete because I do realize how it can be taken!
Like I told my wife years ago - if I say something, and there's a good way to take it and a bad way to take it, always assume I mean it in the best way! Same goes for what I write here!
Now let's get back on topic. As for the 35, I've never seen one. I've hunted with a lot of people from all over the country, guys from the Northeast, Midwest, South and Southwest. If you saw someone deer-hunting with a lever-action, it was almost always a 30-30, and usually seen in the brush country of Texas or where hunting in the thicker woods. Back when I was a teenager, I always had to use my dad's 30-30, and later he bought one and gave to me. I didn't really like it though, because when we hunted near open fields or areas with longer shots, the deer always popped out about 175-200 yards, and it had been drilled into me that the 30-30 was worthless after 150 yards (this was long before the "Leverevolutions" came along!).
M-12 got it right when he said,"most folks shooting and hunting I've run into down South only know a .243, .270 or .30-06". Not sure if that's all the folks actually KNOW about, just the most common ones, easiest to find ammo for, etc. Others calibers you might find down here are 7mm, 7mm-08, 25-06, 22-250, and the venerable .308. I've hunted with guys using all those calibers for deer in TX, AZ, LA, GA, NC, and FL.
G.O. thanks for the reply and glad we could straighten things out. lord knows I've got a ton of pet peeves as I'm sure you've all noticed, ( scopes on levers, and learning to use open sights before scopes ). I don't think the north is better than the south, just very different, I never had to use a thermacell, bug repellent/snake protection, sidearm or skin game as soon as recovered before. and we yankees use the skills we have from up north until we can find a better way to do things in our new home and usually learn these new ways from you boys that grew up down here doing it year after year. OK enough of the mutual fanny smooching, we can now get back to busting each others onions. have a nice day honky.
