Looking for opinions and experiences with Big Game Revolvers with barrel lengths of 5 1/2", 6 1/2", 7 1/2" or 10 1/2" Barrels? What do you have, use, like, dislike, hate, and recommend.

Looking at another Ruger Super Black Hawk 44 Mag 7 1/2" gun, hopefully SS, as my 44 Mag carbine back-up for hogs and deer. I had one in SS about four years ago and sold it, like an idiot. One of three or four guns I have regreted selling/trading in my life.

Give me you opinion folks...

one of my first hanguns was a ruger sbh 44mag with 7 1/2" bbl, and from 1975-85 could hit beer cans easy,, at 50 yds offhand, but that squared trigger guard and wide hammer spur can bite you and it is long and heavy to carry. now in my later years if I carry a handgun it's for backup and not a primary hunting weapon/self defense only for use if I am chased up a tree or step on an animal all for extreme close range, when I am carrying a scoped rifle and game is too close for scope work or scope becomes fogged/dirty. so for me a 3" S&W mdl 10 in 357, or ruger sp101 in 357 works just fine with a good 180 gr load and snake shot in the first chamber or 2. a long barreled 44 mag or larger caliber will weigh almost as much as your carbine and if it had no scope ( the way they were intended to be used ) I'd see no reason to carry the extra wt. if using a shotgun I don't need or carry a pistol. but if using a scoped gun esp a small caliber I like to have a backup, 357 or 45 acp with short bbl's and easy to carry. now if you are going to hunt with a handgun only I'd go with a BMF like the 480 or 454 casull or maybe 500 mag ( personaly I'd rather carry an open sighted lever, not much diff in wt anyway, but to each his own ) with a 6-7 1/2" bbl and would also consider the desert eagle 50 cal.if you realy want a 44mag backup for your carbine I'd look hard at the S&W 44 mag mtn pistol in 44 mag with a 4" bbl. jmo, N.G.

hell yeah about 95% of them I know shart from shinola. but when I was in college I made my beer money buying and selling guns from 1 shop to another and back then you could keep them in your dorm room. It didn't hurt that I grouse hunted with the dean or shot trap with the gov's brother. don't mean to sound like a know it all and if I don't know I'm not ashamed to admit it, you just tend to pick up a few things over the years. unfortunately all you're probably gonna pick up is genital warts.

I own a S&W 500 8 3/4" and it is very heavy to carry. I does shoot nice, but the ammo is hard to get and very expensive. I also own a S&W 629 8 3/4" full lug it carries nice in the woods and shoots nice too. The ammo is pretty cheap and easy to get and has plenty of stopping power. As my carry gun in the woods I use a S&W 686 6" full lug. It is not great for long shots, but it is easy to shoot and ammo is pretty cheap and readily available.
