I have been hunting this season with my Win 94 in 30-30 and my AR in 6.8. On this new lease we were lucky enough to inherit a number of shooting houses and I feel like I want to get back into a more traditional style scoped deer rifle.
Somehow Gunboy got it into my head that I need to get into a 308. (I didn't need much convincing). I put out a trade request on FL Guntrader and have started getting hit with offers. I was specifically looking for a Rem 700 or Win 70 in 308 but was just offered a 7mm-08. After a little digging it got me somewhat interested. So I pose this question to the forum. If you have personal experience with both calibers, which would you get and why?
For a little background info, I will be using it purely for hunting, from stand or shooting house with shots ranging from 50 to 200 yards.
Note: If anyone out there has a 308 and is looking for a trade, shoot me a PM and we can talk.
To me .308 is what military snipers use. So that would be my choice if i can afford it. Instead i went 30.06. Cause of money.
I never had a 7mm-08 of my own but have shot several that belonged to others (all were Remington 700).
IMHO 7mm-08 is plenty for Florida and 90% of other games in lower 48. They were all accurate and offered similar or a little less recoil than the 308.
If you reload the 7mm-08 is a great round along with the 260 Remington due to the price of factory ammo. If you don't reload get the 308 as ammo is everywhere and is "reasonable" in price.
I reload but Istill shoot the 308
7mm-.08 hands down!
.308 gets my vote for bolt action game gun..
i regret selling my AR-10 over and over again.. now you can't find a ar-10 rifle for under 1500 anywhere..
