Look at the Berkley Lightning Rods. They've always been good rods for a reasonable price.

How much line do you really need? What are your intentions with the reel? I would think 150-200, maybe 300 yards of 50# braid would stop just about anything you are chasing with that reel. I just found a 500 yard spool of Powerpro 50# for $40 on eBay. I wouldn't think that would be prohibitively costly, since you could set up a couple reels. Just skip the mono backing and have one less knot that could potentially fail.

First off, you don't need 50# braid. 20# Fireline should be about right. You will never be able to cast 50# out of that reel. I have fished braid for a LOOONNNGGG time and can tell you that Fireline is less apt to get windknots on a spinning reel than Power Pro. However on a baitcaster I prefer Power Pro
Attach your mono to the reel using an arbor knot

Reel up about half of your spool with mono. On spinning outfits I use like 14-20#.

Next tie your mono backing to your fireline braid using an albright knot

Fill up your spool(BUT DO NOT OVERFILL) with the braid. It should be reeled on tight as you can get it.
Next, tie on a 2' piece of 20# florocarbon shock leader, using an albright knot(see link above), or
a uni-uni knot
or a surgeons knot

Next, tie on a hook and hook it to something in your yard. Open the bail and walk down the street until you get all the braid off down to the backing. Tighten your drag and reel it as tight as you possibly can

Hope that helps out a bit
