You shoulda seen that comin, HB. I only let my kid use my gear that I know if he breaks it, I'm only out $50-60. Anything more, and he'd better be stopping at the tackle shop on the way home to pick up a new rod and/or reel, whichever he breaks.

or all you have to do is grab ahold of the spool and make sure the drag ain't being pressured too hard.

I always hated when guys would anchor the boat to the wreck with some of that heavy dacron. We'd pretty much have to tie to off to a cleat and drive the boat away to break it off.
