There used to be a lot more skunks in Florida, but their population has dwindled for various reasons.

I remember reading an article a few years ago about some study the U of F was conducting, trying to determine what was causing the skunks to disappear. At the time they were asking everyone to report any sightings or roadkilled skunks so they could get some stats. Never heard much more about it, but I know it's been years since I drove down the highway and smelled that distinctive odor.

Out 72 on the way to arcadia we smell them all the time. My guess would be loss of habitat due to construction.

I've driven that route heading over to West Palm and Boca Raton many times over the last couple of years, and have yet to smell a skunk. Used to smell them all the time going up 39 to Plant City or 37 up to Lakeland, or even along 62 through Parrish and Duette, but just can't remember the last time I smelled one.
