Grounding issues can cause radiators and heater core to fail prematurely. I believe there is a way to test for that I just dont know how.
I hate paying someone to work on my vehicles after being screwed one time. I often wonder if it is worth it to buy the tools to do it myself. I also have to keep a spare for when I do have to work on something I have something to drive. The latest thing for me has been the ac in my wifes Suburban. Vehicles have a way of sucking a wallet dry.
Consider yourself lucky if you've only been screwed one time by a mechanic! It took a while before I found a good one before I met my wife's uncle.
