This year was the first deer I've ever failed to recover. And trust me, I spent more time looking for her than I have hunting this year. Wherever she went, it was at least 500 yards from where I shot her, and she wasn't bleeding the last 400 yards. Either that, or she found a way to climb trees or hide in a gopher turtle hole.
T- bone if it's the first time it's happened, at your age, I'd say your doing good. it's happened to me twice, once with a shotgun slug, hit the deer while jumping past me on a narrow trail in mid air at about 3-6 feet away tops. the deer landed in a heap literally at my feet and didn't move or twitch, so close I put a foot on it's chest and got greedy and tried to take a second doe it was with and moved my foot off the deer for a sec to miss the second shot, when I looked down the deer was gone, no blood anywhere and me and about a 6 foot area were covered in white deer hair and a little meat, my buddy was kidding says I shot it in the tail. the second one I nailed at last light a good hit with my 7mm08 and it went right down and just then a young kid sitting behind a stone wall nearby I didn't know was there jumps up and yells great shot you got it and runs right to the deer ( right in my direct line of fire for a second shot ) the deer jumps up and bolts and we never found it. so now if it's still on it's feet, I keep shooting. and even if it goes right down i prepare for a second shot and give it some time to make sure it's dead before approaching it.remember that Woody Allen movie where he goes deer hunting, gets a deer ,ties it to the front bumper of his VW Beetle then it wakes up while he's driving thru the holland tunnel, good stuff.
