Allen i am sorry to hear this. my grandfather has dementia. it has gotten worse since he had a slight procedure in nov., however my great grandmother also got dementia most definitely after haveing surgery. i believe the anesthesia is very rough on the mind after 60.

Thank you so much for this tidbit. Gives me something intelligent to bring up to drs tomorrow. Wednesday, she had a simple kidney stone surgery. Thursday, she had a stomach feeding tube placed. Since Thursday she has degraded a bit each day. Today being the worst. Before that she was pretty sharp mentally for an elderly woman. SInce then she has gone cookoo (for lack of better term)

Dam kid. You know if theres anything i can ever do im just a phone call away.

avoid general anesthesia as much and time spent under as possible. much can be done under twilight sedation without the side affects. we debated the feed tube option with my Mom. towards the end all organ systems will slow down and food/meds water may not be processed and reach where they need to go and actually do more harm than good. If you get her in a lucid moment discuss her wishes and trust your instincts/gut feelings. sometimes the best (and hardest) thing is to do nothing but comfort measures. to prolong the inevitable for a very short time by more painful/expensive surgeries is not something I would want for me. MD's are kind of ethically bound ( or sometimes just greedy) to prolong life as long as possible without regard to the pt's comfort, financial situation or family wishes. sorry to be blunt but when you reach the die at home/hospital or skilled care facility, that is a tough choice. we respected Moms wishes to die at home with hospice care, ( I can not say enough good things about them ). It was very hard on us but after, we are glad we respected her final wishes.

Today was a better day. They found an infection that showed up in some labs last night on a culture. Being treated. She is not so cookoo today and actually barely remembers yesterday at all. Still not out of the woods yet. Probably getting released tomorrow to rehab for a week or so
