Pursue whatever can make you the most money with the least amount of work. This has been my motto from day one! My schooling has never stopped in 10 years, but I am beginning to settle down these days.
Some of this went into my consideration. I was weighing quality of life vs $ and based upon the opportunity, I would be taking in +/- 20% more of what I was already billing. Again a no brainer, more $ for the same amount of work but it was still a difficult decision.
Late yesterday afternoon we finally had our "Come to Jesus" meeting. I was dreading the conversation but fully prepared for it, after 15 years my boss and I had covered a lot of ground together. He did make one last ditch effort to put something on the table where we could take over 50% of the company in 5 years and 100% after 10 years but it still wasn't enough to change the decisions that had been made. Lesson to be learned...Time Kills Deals, don't draw hard lines in the sand when negotiating because once the other party gets up from the table and starts looking around, the opportunity can dry up quickly.
The conversation went alot better than I could have ever imagined, I believe he was fully prepared for the decision, he had been planning for the worst but hoping for the best. At the end of the day he just needed a decision so he could move forward with some certainty. He has some hard decisions to make over the coming months and I don't envy him for them but its his company now.
So starting mid January, I am moving on and looking forward to the next challenge in my professional life. Here to hoping the next 15 go as well as the last 15.
Good luck chief! I have had some very tough decisions to make since 2008 and it sure isn't easy. You'll do fine and I think you did the right thing!
