I'm 100% with DONY1 on this point...
Partners means trouble and usually failure ahead.
I speak from personal experience and experience of many others.
I have never been self employed. but I have made career decisions very similar to your situation. I always chose what was going to satisfy my immediate and future needs. I have had to "give up" the buddy buddy relationships and turn it into a more professional relationship. In the long run-I feel no one looks out for yourself but you. Sometimes it isn't all about money though. tough decision-never look back and say "what if"!!
Don't make money the top priority. Think about your children and family and what they need. Understand that money is something you DO need but you'll have to determine how much you'll need.
My wife and I have both turned down promotions and new positions that paid more so we can spend more time as couple and family. My wife is now considering working just part time so she can spend more time with our children as they are entering that "difficult" age when they need more supervision and attention. It will mean less money but we'll still make enough that we won't starve.
I don't know about you but I know of a lot of rich families with F-ed up kids.
Pursue whatever can make you the most money with the least amount of work. This has been my motto from day one! My schooling has never stopped in 10 years, but I am beginning to settle down these days.

This is some great advice!
