This was a surprise to see today while scouting. This is one of the bigger trees I have ever seen. I'm sure you S. Fla guys see this every day, But you have to understand that all the mature cypress was cut back in the turn of the century up here in N. Fla. I still find the big stumps from the cypress cutting...but even the bigger trees are only a hundred or so years old. Not sure why this ole gal wasn't cut
It was really a treat seeing this beauty. Just stood there and admired it for a while and wishing it could tell me some stories. Ill have plenty of time to admire it this season, because I am gonna have a stand about 50 yards from it
Iluv2hunt,
That is a big tree. There is a similar sized tree behind my wife's Dads old place. It is on the Little Econlockhatchee River. Grandpa says the tree is hollow and the loggers simply didn't waste thier time with "cull" trees. Grandpa is an ol' time Florida cowboy and says there were quite a few of these hollow cypress trees left in the creeks and branches of Orange County 70 years ago. As he told us about the tree in the creek behind his old place, he said the hollow trees would usually break into pieces when they were cut and hit the ground, leaving wood that was not fit to transport to a sawmill. Just a little bit of old Florida that most folks don't even know existed. Thanks for the great picture. Treefarmer
I found one like that during turkey season this year on the lease I was in. It would have taken 5 or 6 guys arms spread to make it all the way around the base. It was HUGE. Neither myself or my buddy had ever seen one so large. We also did the same thing and just sat there and stared at it in awe.
Ive seen a few huge cypress trees myself, mainly the trunk too or part of it. It is a awesome sight.
This tree is 5 minutes from my house, thought you guys might be interested.
