What is aspergers syndrome?
Autism
Sent from my DROID RAZR
Thanks all,
I don't mind talking about it. In fact, I wish I'd have known more about it before actually finding out I had a son with it. I always saw those commercials and ads and never thought twice about it.
Yes, Asperger's is on the Autism spectrum. Depending on what you read some "pro's" think it's more so others not so much. But it's more less a high-functioning form of autism. Some folks call the "Nerd syndrome" because the kids are very smart but have a really hard time with social skills.
I am just scared that instead of trying to work within the realm of his needs, they (Clay County) are just going to try to stick him a room full of kids with special needs that may range across the WHOLE SPECTRUM of things and it will really set him back. He's very smart and active but like many Aspie's he gets fixated on things (in his case it's hats and little baby dolls) and instead of using that as a tool I guess the teacher tried to stop him and he went off the deep end...
Our friends know how to deal with him. We can leave him with family and friends for extended periods of time so I'm just confused as to why a teacher who has probably seen waaaayy more Aspie's than us couldn't. MAybe she just had too many kids. I don't know. I'm not going place blame.
My wife is going to talk with the school folks on Monday and see where they are trying to send him. I might have some flexibilty with moving through work, that's why I asked. We are from Plant City originally so all our family is there so it's nice to hear they might have some schools that would be good. I just hope we hear some good news about the Clay county schools because we really love it here.

We just had a very nice family move into my neighborhood from Texas. They have 3 kids, the oldest one has Aspergers. I believe he is in 2nd grade and attends normal class. My son often plays with him and his twin siblings that are in Pre-k. You have described him perfectly. He is highly intelligent and learns quickly although his social skills are lacking and at times becomes overly sensitive. My son and his siblings have figured out how to play with him and deal with his fixations, I am surprised the teacher and school in general cant find a way to accommodate him.
One of the funnier things I have noticed is that when all four of them start playing Wii at my house, they always allow him to play with the same character on Mario Brothers, at 1st it was an issue and now they all deal with it and move on.
I hope you get the help you need.
My youngest son has aspergers sy. he is going into the 7th grade, My wife is a 25 year elementary teacher so he has been at her school under her close supervision through hi elementary years, This last year was his first year away from her school but still in public school it was not good he had a few teacher that could work with him but most did nothing extra to help him.
This year he is going to a small private special needs school. In Palm Beach county where we live.
