In NYS where I grew up it was shotgun only with slugs for 22 days of deer season. I started in 1985 sharing an old Wingmaster 870 16 gauge 28" Modified choke Plain barrel with slugs that my dad started using in 72 or 73 after moving from a Savage Bolt Action 16 gauge with a tin can on the end. We used it until we couldn't find ammo (slugs) for it in 1990. I'd bet that old 870 has put more vension in the freezer from 72-90 than most folks have shot during there entire life. Not 90 lb field dressed FL deer, 150-180 lb plus field dressed does and 200 lb bucks. I shot a 7 PT, 2 1/2 year old Buck that field dressed at 193 lbs in 1986.
Two doe tags and two buck tags every year from 1972-85 (mom got her tags and license and dad always filled hers and his) and 1985-89 (Dad and I). Joined the Army in 87 and made it home 87, 88, and 89. Desert Storm got me for 90 and 91 since I had to get more Army training for promotion upon my return from the desert in Jun 91. Missed two seasons in my younger years and then only got to NYS hunt once every two or three years due to being overseas so much until retirement in 2008.
Don't think Dad nor I ever had a year that we didn't fill two or three of the four tags we had to fill from 72-89.
Next time you happen to bump into a police officer take a second to ask him/her what type shotgun he/she has in the trunk or next to the radio. Doesn't matter where you're from either...

happen to live down the street from a TPD officer. He has a Benelli in the trunk. TPD has their choice of several shotguns. 870, 500, semi mossberg,semi winchester,semi benelli.

I've got no exp with the nova, just the sbe. and Scott if you were in the navy what the hell were ya doin in the middle of a desert? probly why they had you in the "special boat", is that like the short bus?
