Would love to hear some of your experiences about improved groups as a result of floating the barrel. A good friend asked me to trade scopes with him, they are both 3x9 Redfields, only his has a 50mm objective lens and will not work on a rifle he is setting up. Mine has a 40mm lens and will work on his rifle. This being said, while I have my Rem. 700 .243 ADL down for the scope swap, I was wondering about cleaning out the barrel channel so it does not contact the barrel. I have an old 700 30/06 that is free floating and it shoots great groups. But reading on-line has revealed that Rem. intentionally has left a small area of wood near the front sling swivel stud that is there to put upward pressure on the barrel. Reading on, there were pros and cons about free-floating barrels. Does anyone have an input? Thanks, Treefarmer
Free-floating your barrel on a Rem 700 can and will improve accuracy if done properly. I would recommend an epoxy pillar-bed job and free-floating the barrel. Much easier than you think and will have tremendous results.
