All,

I am interested in buying a black-powder rifle. I have my eye on a 1980's style Hawkin rifle in 50.cal

There is a gun-show in lakeland this weekend and have a question about NIS background checks.

IS there an NIS check for someone buying a blackpowder gun? I know there are some goofy rules about "Antique guns" or replicas, so I was just wondering.

I ask because everytime they run me I have a 3 day wait, even though I'm a licesned security officer, and have a valid CCW. And I have always been told there is no way around this.

Thanks
G

To my knowledge, no there is no BG checks for bp guns. Last ML I bought at wal mart I paid cash at the front counter with it and was on my merry way

If you have a cwp, not sure why you had to wait three days in the past...I know before I had my carry permit I had trouble buying a rifle on one occasion. I came back as "provisional", which is a mystery to this day since I have never had an issue with the law or even a speeding ticket. I heard if you are a victim of identity theft, I hear it can come back like that, but I never had that either

If you know someone in FDLE, I would get them to check out your background to see what the hangup is on you

Nope.

Do you know what make it is? There were some reeaally good shooting Hawken-styles made back then.

The gun I am looking at is made by Traditions, its a replica of a Hawkin.
I really want the kit version cause I'm a woodsmith, and enjoy making stuff, but I may buy a ready to shoot model if the opportunity arises at the gun show.

I know if buying from another person there are no BG checks, but if I get one from shoot-straight or other gun store they do BG checks. And I always get the provisional result and the store has to wait the manditory three days, before they can release the gun to me.

I am not a Bad-guy, heck i even work at the local S.O., but there must be someone in this state with the same name that was not such a great guy, and thats the only reason I keep getting the provisional approvals i guess.

Thanks

Not trying to pick a fight, just going to offer my 2 cents....I think you should really hold out for either a hell of deal on the Traditions, or better yet look hard for CVA MTN Rifle or even a Lyman Great Plains Rifle ($500 or so new). They shoot better and are way closer to the "originals" than a traditions. OR since you say you are good with woodworking....save just a little more and get a good quality kit (NOT the cheap Traditions ones) like this for instance:

But if you are wanting the cheapest "traditional" gun out there the Traditions is probably #1 choice I guess.
