Does anyone on here have experience using this type of sight either now or in the past? Did you like it or recommend it? Pros vs cons?
peeps or aperture sights are a lot less common now (except on bows) but were very popular back in the 50's to 70's but they did have good accuracy, now everybody uses scopes or those holographic (which I would love to try). basicly the smaller the aperture (hole) the more accurate but less field of view and closer to the eye it needed to be and less light it let in. for a peep to be mounted on a bbl presumably say 6" or more from the eye the hole would have to be pretty large and then not so accurate for rifle. for a shotgun for say turkey it might work. but I'm not exactly up to date with all the newest gear, a pic would help.
Nacho,
Here is a link I was looking at: http://www.skinnersights.com/barrel_mount_6.html
I was thinking about removing the aperture and using it as a ghost ring setup. The reason I narrowed to this one was the fact there is a good chance it will fit in the original dovetail on my 94. I do not want to modify the gun and/or its looks and handling characteristics in anyway if I can help it. I just do not care for the original rear sight "a buckhorn I believe??". I have read some reviews from other 94 owners and it appears to get good remarks for quick target acquisition and follow up shooting.
I liked the one in the first pic best mounted on the reciever. without actualy looking thru one I would think the further from your eye the smaller the field of view. I've used millet open sights on my winchester and shotguns with dovetails, they are an adjustable open sight like the pistol sights with a white outline rear and orange ramp front, they are easy and fast to aquire and cheap. I doubt they are as accurate beyond 50-75 yds as a peep but think they would have a larger field of view and let in more light for dawn/dusk shooting. I also believe levers were intended to be sleek, easy carrying and fast handling and a scope kind of defeats the purpose and intended charector of the gun, but I see a lot of scopes on them now and as my eyes have gotten worse I sold mine and use an ultralight short barreled bolt with a low power variable, cuz I couldn't shoot open sights as good as I used to. I'm thinking of trying a holographic/eotech type for a lever or shotgun when I don't want to use a scope.
I will not mount a scope, tang mounted peep or lyman type sight, I do not like the look of any of them. I cant use a receiver mounted version as I have top eject model. I was hoping that using the barrel mount as a ghost ring would work better but I understand the distance argument, I have seen it on a few forums as well. I am going to keep practicing with the buckhorn for awhile to see if it grows on me but I might still give the skinner a try, it seems some shooters really like it and experience tighter groups.
