I've done really well in Okaloosa county if Jan. The bucks are not as big as those stightly to the east, but the numbers make up for the slightly smaller size.

Are you hunting north of I-10 above Crestneck, or out on Eglin? I hunted on some private land east of Crestneck almost into Walton county back in the mid-90s. We saw several good deer, but all too far for a clean kill. Went on a hunt the next day with the guy's neighbor where they ran them with dogs, and I just didn't care for that method. But with the thick woods and swamps it was probably the best way to get the deer moving where you can shoot them.

I know a guy that lives in Laurel Hill. He is the last house in Okaloosa County on HWY 85 before it crosses into Walton County. I've hunted his place the last 2 years and have taken 3 deer. I missed on a bunch of hogs during the muzzleloader seson due to a faulty primer and have seen bobcat every time I've been there. Never hunted Eglin. I had a permit for 2 years running, but since I could get on private land, I never used them.
I've already made arrangements with the guy for the early muzzleloader season and he is giving me a doe tag for the first weekend it is legal to take one with a rifle. I fully expect to take at least one buck plus the doe and maybe a hog. Okaloosa County has been good to me.

Sounds like the same neck of woods we hunted. I've been told I have kin in Laurel Hill, but never looked them up. I know there's many with the same last name, and my family settled around south Alabama, North Florida back before the Civil War. In fact, I recently hooked up online with some second cousins and such who live up between Panama City and Marianna. They live where my grandparents grew up before moving to central Florida in early 1900s. Anyway, they have a annual "family hunt" up there during the holidays on land they own along the Apalachicola. Gotta do my family duty and go help out the cousins this year! "tup"
