slug gun, what gauge?

What I am getting at (and I don't mean to derail this man's thread) is that a turkey choke, or a full choke for that matter, are not the best choices to shoot buckshot thru. Because of the tight constriction it deforms the pellets as they come thru the choke and causes them to fly erratically. I shoot buckshot thru a modified choke and I shoot #1 buck. I have never been able to get 00buck to pattern worth a darn. And that is shooting many different brands of buckshot thru several choke tubes and three different shotguns

I've got the 870 Wingmaster 12ga with mod choke - do you think that would handle buckshot ok? Would I have to get a slug barrel for slugs? All I've ever hunted with it are dove and quail, which I haven't been able to do for years! It would take me a case of shells to get my limit of dove!

buckshot will handle great with a modified choke. If you dont want to buy a slug barrel you can allways buy "rifled slugs" Unless you have a mossberg 835 with a wider barrel then you need to change barrels.

that should be a good setup. Best advice I can give is to get a few boxes of shells and se what shoots best. You will be amazed at how bad and how good different brands shoot.
Trust me, I spent a mini fortune trying to find the right buckshot/choke combo
and don't get me started on trying to find turkey loads/choke my gun likes. I could have bought a new turkey gun cheaper 🙁

Hey cr0ck those rifled slugs dont impart the stabilising spin that is done by a rifled bbl.A rifled choke tube will help some!
