if it's a WIN. 94 it is top eject. and yes it is a PIA, (this is just from my experience) it is hard to sight in, and to keep it zeroed.
i have an old Mauser 8mm that no matter which mount the shell would hit the scope on the eject. now you could do this. ( it is not a PRE 64' and in good shape, worth money) have it drilled and tapped forward of the receiver. mount a low magnification pistol scope. like the Styer Scout Rifle, you will loose you sights. it works well for a short/medium range brush gun.
second thought, go to Winchester's site and look up the serial # to verify age and see if it worth doing this to.
Being that it is top eject they put high rings to let the spent shell come out. I would put a 4x40mm scope on there. Try to find one in a wide angle optic. Honestly you do not need a 3x9 on a 30-30. They were designed for close range shots

It was bought brand new a couple of years ago and has less than 10 rounds fired from it. My son decided to pull it a part to clean it and that why I need to have some work done to it.
the scope on my 8mm is a Leupold VX-II 1 - 4x 20mm. works really well.

What is a good brand to start off looking at?
