I do most of my hunting with handguns these days. I have had a couple of contenders and they shoot very well. Have had several blackhawks, still have a 41mag. I love it but no blackhawk can shoot like a contender. I also have to use a hogue grip cause the stock grip is to small. My all time favorite gun that I got to shoot was a friends Freedom Arms 454 magna ported. That had to be the finest hand gun I ever shot. If I could have any gun made, just one gun, that would be my choice. Loved that thing. To bad they are so spendy. Anyway I guess it all depends on what you want to hunt, how do you want to hunt it, what the max range will be, and can you enjoy that much recoil. Personally I prefer a wheel gun on the ground and for shots under 100 yards. Always nice to have a fast backup shot if you need it. Especially for hogs. For shots over 100 yards and up a tree the single shots are flatter shooting and more accurate. I would vote for a 454 wheel gun if you don't mind a little kick.
Don't know if you're still looking, but one of the pawn shops I frequent has 2 Thompson CF hunter handguns. I don't know what they're asking for them, but they look nice. Gimme a PM if you want the name of the place.
pm hogman with the info.. hes looking for one.. thanks.
I agree with chief55, I think freedom arms are putting in the labor to make the very best gun possible, but all those man hours for labor come at a price. the S&W performance center is no slouch either. wish I could get a 5 1/2" freedom arms in 480 cal, that would be the tits.
One more thing you might want to consider for accuracy in a 454. These double action handguns your looking at have a 1:24 twist. The TC barrel has a 1:16 twist. Magnum research is also a 1:16 twist. I do not know what Freedom arms is. What does this mean? The double action guns are made for the shorter/lighter bullets, less than 300 grains and less recoil. The single action guns and TC are made for the longer heavier bullets, 300 grains+ more knock down power and more recoil. Just something to think about. When purchasing a gun it is best to match the intended use bullet to the gun/rate of twist for best accuracy. I used TC as a guide cause they tend to be very accurate. :wacko like you really needed anything more to think about. 😆
I do not know that exact bullet weight crossover point, just used 300 grains as an example.
Anyone seen any good deals on any hunting handguns lately. I'm thinking about buying/trading for one. For next seasons hog action. :2guns
