not to try to influence your decision, i really like the Bushnell Elite series. 3200 or 4200. they both come in a 3x9-50 mm, and have come down in price. because of newer models. they don't have BDC reticles. i don't like them anyways (BDC reticles) . have had great luck with my Bushnells. very rugged and have put them through alot of abuse.

I have one made by Tru-Glo(who actually made the first BDC reticle) on my 7mm And I absolutely love the scope, but hate the reticles

I never even had a scoped gun until I was 30. a mossberg 12ga mdl 500 with a rifled bbl and millet open sights ( and my 20/10 vision at the time ) was all I needed and made my longest one shot kill with that set up. everything is a trade off high mag is nice at the range but is not needed in the woods, I've probobly only dialed the scope up from the lowest setting 2-3 times, shots seem alot closer in the woods ( to me anyway ). a large objective lens gathers more light and gives a wider field of view but raises the ocular lens ( the one you look thru ) higher away from the stock and can change the fit of the gun.if looks matter to you at all a big scope on a little gun look silly. the 270 is a fast long range cartridge idealy suited for shots 100-500 yds, but has excelent stopping power accuracy and recoil on the mid-mild side. that gun would work well with just about any scope you choose from 1.5x5, 2x7,2x10,3x9, or even 4.5x14 for out west. if your expecting ranges point blank to 75 yds and an animal jumps up under your feet, trying to get on target fast with a higher mag scope all your gonna see is a brown blur. look at several different scopes already mounted at diff power settings and try to bring them on to a small target fast and see what you like. if I were a young kid your age and I'd be looking hard at an open sighted lever action like the one horsefly is selling and use that to 75 yds, then get that 3x9 or higher for longer shots with the 270

i'm not understanding the theory of a 270 being a "flatter, out west gun" somewhere on here i thought i put that to rest. the 30-06 is faster with less drop out to 300 yds. (hornady SST 150 gr, HAD POSTED THE BALLISTICS OF THE 30-06, 308 AND .270 utilizing the same grain bullet) i use 3x9-50 on my .270 and keep it on 3 power while walking and maybe up to 4 or 5 while in the stand if i'm looking down a long lane. haven't had any problem getting the scope on a moving animal on the ground.
