I need a good scope for my rifle.... I have a 30.06 Remington Woodsmaster and I have a "walmart special" scope I bought just to make sure I had one... and at 100 yards i can't even see the target.. .not too often am I anywhere that needs more then a 40 to 60 yard shot nowadays with the new camp but I need some ideas... help... without spending a fortune of course.
Bushnell Trophy 1.75-4x32mm scope.
About $70 shipped.
an 06 can kill for quite a distance but if you're really talking of 100 yds max, you don't need a lot of magnification. also I believe in small gun = small scope for looks and handling. 0-1 power is plenty of mag for accurate shots at 30-40 yds, has a wider field of view and is steadier to hold and faster to get on target. I can hit a 4" spinner at 200 yds all day (from a bench) with a 1.5-5 power x 25mm obj lens. variable power scopes will give you more versatility, always keep em dialed all the way down while walking, for close shots. a lot of folks like the largest objective sizes possible for good light gathering and better field of view. for under 100 yds a 0-3 power, 1x4, 1.5x5 would work fine and be on the smaller/lighter side. a 2x7 x 40mm objective (likely my pick) would give you further distance, since that caliber is quite capable of it and you never know where you might end up hunting, would fit and look good on that gun, only downside is you MIGHT lose a LITTLE speed in target acquisition at very close ranges. for under 100 yds I would have picked a gun in a short action caliber likely a 308/7mm08 in a ultralight bolt or lever action 30-30 or 35 rem or other lever caliber or even a shotgun with slug bbl possibly and rifle sights or scope. the 06 is probably THE MOST versatile caliber and will work fine up close but I consider it a 200+ yd gun. you really don't need that extra size, wt and recoil under 200 yds IMO. those rem semi's aren't exactly famous for their long range accuracy like the brownings but you will be very able to put about any animal on the ground quickly with it under 100yds.
For a 100yd and under gun, I love a fixed 4-power scope. Tasco, Bushnell and many others make a low-cost fixed power scope that would work very well. My personal recommendation for a scope for just about any standard hunting situation is the Leupold VX-II 3X9X40.
I think for your particular situation, you may want to look into the Leupold Rifleman series or the new Redfield scopes which are currently being made/sold by Leupold. Cheaper and still pretty high quality and they all have a lifetime warranty.
ok thanks.. i'll look into those..
