the 308 vs the 30-06 debate is a close one. I'd call the 06 the best caliber ever invented with the 08 as second. both shoot identical bullets and with bbl length = and bullet wt being = very close in velocity. the 308 will burn less powder to achieve the same velocity, have less recoil and with a shorter action. the 06 I'd give a slight edge with stopping power, but not much. can't think of anything here in Fl that an 06 can do something and an 08 can't. but it all comes down to personal preff. both excellent rounds.
I have the axis in 30-06 and like it. The only complaint I had was the trigger was really heavy out of the box. Went to the hardware store and picked up some lighter springs and fixed it for under $1.

That dont sound safe, but i guess its possible. My rem 700 sps 30.06 had like a 7.5 lb pull on it. I was shooting horrible groups cause of the flinch factor. Got the trigger worked to like 2.3 lbs and i shoot 100 percent better groups.

You did better getting an -06 than a 308 in my opinion. Congrats!
agreed! the 30.06 is my favorite caliber, the recoil is manageable, it comes in a wide variety of bullet weights, and is powerful enough to travel anywhere in north america and take game.
with that handle theres a real shocker, no offense. both rounds use the same exact bullets so selection is =. and there will be no discernable differance until beyond 300 yards. only real diff is the 06 brass will hold more powder, due to it's larger size. not trying to say one is better, both are as good as it gets imo, just depends on hunting style/situation and personal prefferance.
