I've shot exactly 1 buck with a shotgun. Was hunting a place in Virginia that was buckshot only, couldn't even use slugs. I took an old Winchester pump and 00 buck and went out to slay the mighty whitetail. One shot, one dead fork-horn buck. I've killed a lot of deer and other game over the years and I believe that buck went down quicker than anything else I've ever shot. The short range might have had something to do with it. I don't think he was more than 15 yards away, but that load of buckshot literally knocked him about 10 feet sideways. He went down so quick, I never even saw him drop.
It was one of those Bang Flop things you see on video.
Don't know if I'll ever shoot another deer with a shotgun or not. I'm from back west and all we use shotguns for is birds. Hell, we even shoot rabbits with 22 rifles and pistols. Hunting big game with a shotgun just seems odd to me, but based on that 1 experience, they are effective. :cowboy
when i hunted farmton wma it was shotgun only and all we used were 12 ga 28-30 barrels all full choke and no bigger than #1 buck most used #4 buck even long shots never had to track any down very far 00 and 000 messed up too much good meat
Moss 500, 28" barrel, imp cyl choke with 3" 00 buck or rifiled slugs in the deep dark stuff. No point in taking the rifle in there lookin for deer, unless I'm gonna beat em with it.
870 Wingmaster - 30" Full Choke - #1 Buck in the first 3 spots, slugs in the last two....(yeah I know, only supposed to be three.....whatever)
