Personally I have hunted with a 12 gauge shotgun for the past 5-6 years shooting 3 inch magnum 00 buckshot. Last week my parents went and got me a brand new Remington 770 chambered in 270 for my birthday. The gun itself 400$ after the mail in rebate. It has a realtree AP camo synthetic stock and a stainless steel barrel. Can't beat that for 400$ and it comes in a variety of calibers. They bought the gun from a store called Gander Mountain. As far as kick goes I've shot a few high caliber rifles and not found anything that kicks harder than my shotgun.

I shoot a Marlin 30-30. I use the Hornady leverrevolution ammo balistic tips. Took my 100-150 yd gun and turned it into a 250 yd. gun. But for longer distancees, I like a Ruger or Browning 270.
