HEllo all,

I am looking at buying a new rifle, and want to know which caliber to buy? I am looking to hunt deer, and hog with this caliber.
Also consideration should be given to the avilablity of the cartridge in most gun stores and sprting goods stores. What I mean is, if the calibur is next to impossible to buy right now, i would like to avoid it if possible. I have noticed that 270 seems to be a cartridge that is still on the walmart shelves when no other calibur can be found. So I am leaning this way.
should I go with 223, 243, 270, 300, 30-06, 308, 7mm remingington mag, or something completly different????

Thanks
G

Man,your gonna get 100 different answers to that question. I love the .270,30-06,or anything over .30 cal. All depends on how you hunt. They'll all gitterdone.

I usually use a .243 when im gun hunting. It is a smaller gun and the one i use is a single shot. Its a great gun but if your looking for something that will do a little more damage then I would go to the 300 or 30-06. Some of the guys I hunt with use 7mm. Not the most fun gun to shoot everyday cause it kicks hard but blows decent sized holes through animals.

If you hunt mostly in Florida, the 30-30 is the best gun in my opinion. It does not have the ability to reach out and touch something at long distances, but it has great knock down power at shorter distances (100-150 yards).

A 30-06 is the most popular, and IMHO the best caliber for all around purposes. You can buy shells at just about any store at any time. It also has the largest range of shell weights compared to any other caliber. Weights are available from 55gr varmit rounds to 220 grain

You can usually find a Rifle/scope combo in either Winchester or Remington at Wal Mart for less than $400. The scope is not usually the best but it will get you started.
I have rifles in the following calibers
22
22mag
243
30-30
44mag
30-06
7mm

I've killed more with a 30-06 than any other. Shooting 150grain core-lokts never had one take a step
