Question About Shotgun Only Area

I notices while reading/looking through all the WMA brochures that there are couple places that are "shotgun only".
In such area can you use slugs in the shotgun or does it have to be multiple projectile (buck or bird shots)?
Also, why have shotgun only areas? Is it to minimize the projectile travel in areas with homes nearby?
Sorry if this is dumb questions but I could not find the answer anywhere.

I know upper hills wma is shotgun only. Reasoning is like you said, proximity to houses. You. An watch peoples tv while in the stand. And yes you can use slugs
