It was a terrible day to try running dogs, pouring rain and wind blowing 30mph. But being a dog hunter i have little since, at least thats what my wife says.
Our group met up in the woods around daylight and spread out hoping to see one cross the road, but after $30 in gas all my buddys decided to give it up and head in.
But not me, i decided to go ride the sandhill, well after about ten min. I came across a good set of tracks crossing the fence line rd. I called my buddys on the radio and told them I just seen a nice buck cross the road ( A little white lie). Well they where putting dogs away so it took them a few mins to get there. After 20 mins go by they are almost in position I pull OLE JJ out, by now the track is all but washed out. He can smell just having a hard time moving it. So i decide to dump the box and walk them through the pines. Well JJ is slowly moving toward Ally Prairie RD and im just following along when I look down and see a really nice track, JJ has just passed up. So I go run him down and pick him up, when I put him on that one it sounded like he was jumped. It didnt take but a few seconds and all my dogs got with him, i think they where under a bush some where. That deer wasnt laying 30yrds from me, I heard him get up.
Well i ran to the truck and got on the radio and told everyone he was headed north. Strait to Bugwood, well after a few min he came on and said they have crossed and where headed west toward 4PT RD. Well you know how this goes ,everyone is moving in hot pursuit. All a sudden Runner comes on telling us that dogs where in the road at Ally prairie and 4pt heading south. Well i make a u-turn and head for Chippewa, by the time I get there its to late I can see tracks running down the rd toward G-MAS. About that time Bugwood comes over the radio telling me they where in front of his truck running down the rd, so I hurry to G-MAS following their tracks the whole way. I get out and try to find the track to my surprise he has turned off 50 yrds form G-MAS and I can hear dogs coming, well it messed them up too. After 10 mins I can hear JJ and Cracker Jack coming they never missed a beat just turned west right where the deer had turned. Well I jumped im my truck and headed to the Sawdust pile, when i came around the corner Runner was already there so i went 100 yrds past him and jumped out, as soon as I did i saw Runner pointing his shot gun, and then gesturing he was coming to me. All a sudden I saw him run into a opening and stop 20 yrds from me, I remember seeing the buckshot ruffle his shoulder before i heard the shot. He only weighed 120 lbs, but had a nice rack 8PT About a 14" inside spread and a foot tall. scored 99 3/4. A nice buck for around here.
looks good!
