Lady luck smiled on me once again, Sat Oct. 30, 2004. Something about Bullwinkle wishing me luck may be the key. Let me backtrack a little, after breaking may arm prior to bow season & breaking it again pulling my bow back on a spike it wasn’t looking good to get a buck this season.
I put Doug in a good spot between Jenson & Caswell bay. Taking him in there we saw a little three pt. After sitting there a couple times he had seen a pile of deer, bear & turkey. I remember him calling me saying he had seen a giant. I decided to shine to see if I could catch a glimpse of him. The second night I seen him50yrds from Doug’s stand and knew he was a buck of a lifetime.
Norman and I moved my 20 ft ladder 300yrds from Doug’s stand, closer to the cut Fri. (opening day of muzzle loader)
I seen a couple of does and that little three pt. I let him go (maybe Doug could get him) Friday night. The next morning I got to my stand 45 min before daylight. Just at the crack of daylight I saw that little three pt, he came right under my stand. I decided to let him go again. 30 min later I heard something that sounded like a bear crashing through the woods. All a sudden I saw horns above the palmettos, he was chasing a doe back and forth all morning. After going into the bay about 10:00 I started thinking that was it.
At 10:30 I started grunting, when I did that little three pt took off. I was so occupied with that big buck I haven’t noticed that he had come back and was right under my stand.
I was trying to get him in my scope when outta the corner of my eye I saw that big buck 60yrds away. He was watching the smaller buck and gradually coming closer. At 50yrds he gave me a quartering away shot. After the smoke cleared I saw him hop twice. I got to thinking I never seen him flag, that’s always a good sign but still wasn’t sure.
I walked out to where I thought he was standing when I shot (everything looks different from the ground) and found no sign. After about 10 minutes out 20 yards further I seen bark off the side of a tree. The buck must have been standing close to that tree there was a wad o hair and blood comin out that hole. It looked like someone had taken a bucket of red paint and a paintbrush down thru there. He had run about 50 yards before keeling over. 11 POINT 178 POUND BIGGEST RACK SO FAR!!!!!!!!!! I owe this one to Bullwinkle, no one else this morning could see more than 40 yards due to fog. It was never an issue to me, she had said a little prayer and wished me good luck and to shoot that little 3-point we needed the meat. Good thing i didnt listen to her!
I know he isnt a giant for a lot of you guys, but for public land in central Fl he's not to shabby.
