FWC: Two poach deer, post pics on Facebook
Last Updated: Tuesday, September 7, 2010
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission says two Inverness residents were arrested when an investigation found they had illegally taken a deer and then posted the photos on Facebook.
According to the FWC, William Andrew Buchanan, 21, and Tara Anne Carver, 28, were cited for possession of wildlife taken illegally.
The FWC said Buchanan confirmed he was in the photographs, helping skin the deer. He also said he used his mother's truck to move the deer after he received a call from Carver, and he provided the chain to hang the deer. However, he said he didn't shoot the deer and wasn't present when it was killed.
Jim Smith, the lead investigator on the case, said Carver told the FWC the deer was killed in May and she had published the photographs on her Facebook page.
Carver said Buchanan killed the deer, but confirmed she had skinned it and stored some of the meat in her uncle's freezer.
"Fortunately for investigators, pictures can say a thousand words," Smith said.
Investigations supervisor Lt. Steve Farmer said there was a third person involved in the case, but he wasn't charged because he was in county jail awaiting transport to state prison on multiple felony charges.
Possession of illegally taken wildlife is a second-degree misdemeanor.
