I was going to do the chicken wire compost pile. How long does it take for yours to break down?

compost or "black gold" really makes plants grow faster and more disease resistant. the hotter the weather the faster the action. idealy you need = parts green and brown plant material, an inch or 2 of local soil for the bacteria, a 5 gal bucket of water with 1 cup amonia, 1/2 cup dishsoap, 2 oz's of corn syrup (to feed and speed up bacterial action). once you have some compost you can use that instead of the local soil for the bacteria. I used the Jerry baker model from his book that had 3 = sized bins 3-4' all connected with 1/4" hardware cloth to seperate and let air in, the last bin having hardware cloth on top to sift the final product. I did it in NY and it took app 3 months in cold weather. start by dumping raw material in bin # 1 fork over to bin # 2 after it heats up and starts to change colors, when it's black it's done. sift thru bin # 3 and use in the garden. if you don't have enough brown material you can use straw or hay. it's a bit more set up than a bbl but works well and is always cooking. grass clippings are a great source for green and dead leaves for brown.

You can also get you some worms going in the compost and have a good bait supply!

you won't have to go get the worms, they find thier own way in there, and there will be plenty. you can even buy worm casings, (turds) for fertalizer.

Palms???

Yes. The pic is old and most of those have found new homes now by now, the others from that mat are in 7gal pots. I have 5x that many now.

I thought the only peeps that had indoor grow setups grew mary jane lol. I'm glad to see a legit use for one.

I use the potting soil from the mulch mill near tallahassee pre-mixed with 10-10-10 and it's some great stuff. I use a 50/50 mix of peat moss and perlite mix for my seed beds. I gave up on farming years ago when I realized I grew way more veggies than my extended family could eat.
