There is no doubt about that. The area between Gum Swamp Road and Forest roads 234 and 263 is loaded with our black friends.

Ok, as promised, I need to pick your brains.

After scouting ONF several times, I found this nice little spot. It's a few miles off the beaten path, thats a few miles off the dirt road, thats several miles off the paved road (it's way out there). It sits just slightly lower than the rest of the land. I have seen lots of signs of deer. There is also this nice little clearing just big enough that I could get a clear shot off as far as about 100yrds off in the woods.

So my question is....
The few and far between times that I have hunted deer, it was in a tree stand with a rifle. Do you good folks have tips to hunting on the ground? Also, at that range what would be your weapon of choice, rifle or shotgun?

I hunt from the ground more often than not these days.

First thing is is to actually sit down and make sure you have a field of view. Sometimes you just can't see squat once you sit down...LOL
Know the wind direction and use it accordingly.
Construct something to conceal you. It doesn't have to be elaborate. Cut some palmettos and make a blind, take one of those little blinds on a stick as I call them and make something, whatever. Your just trying to break up your outline.
BE STILL!
