my brother lived in portland and one of his buddies hunts eastern oregon. last time i was up there, in july, he showed me a ton of pictures. his whole family including mother all elk hunt and they have taken some really nice elk off of public land. if i can get the money up to make the trip i have a place to stay and people to help get me where i need to be and all that. someday ill make it out there, hopefully my brother will go with me.
There's elk up in Kentucky, reintroduced by the state several years ago. They have a permit draw, like a lot of western states. My brother lives up in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia. and guys he hunts with have seen elk up in West Virginia. The aren't sure if the elk migrated from KY, or someone brought them in, but they were on public land. At the time, they were told that since WV had no elk regulations, taking one would be fine as long as they had a deer permit and the elk met the same deer limits for antlers, etc.
Brother and 8 others drove out to Colorado last season (2007) and he got a 5x5 elk. I forget how big it was, but he said it took them several hours to hack it up and pack it back to their camp.
I'd have to go on a two-year training regimen to get in shape for a Rocky Mountain hunt! I'd die walking the hills before I got a shot off!

I wen tot the gym every day for 6 months and rode my bike about 5 miles a day and still about died. The elevation will kick your butt. The cabin we stayed in was at 7500 feet and we hunted between 9-10,000 😯

Yeah, my brother stays in pretty good shape, and lives in the mountains in Virginia, but there's a big difference in walking up and down the slopes at 3000 feet versus doing it at 8,000-10000!
I was in Denver for 3 months of USAF training after basic, and I was running 5 miles 3 or 4 times a week, swimming, lifting weights, etc. We would go camping up in Rocky Mountain Nat'l Forest some weekends, up around 7500-8000 feet, and just hiking around, etc. would wear us out. Came back home to Lakeland on leave, and I could run almost twice as far as I could in Denver.
