Ok I'm plannin on hunting turkey this year bout never done it before. How do u guys scout for turkey?????
For me:
I try to get in the woods before daylight any morning I can. I try to do more listening and observing, than calling. I do not even take a call other than maybe 1 mouth call and a locator call. If you get a turkey to gobble, try to sneak in as close as you can without bumping him. What you want to do is SEE WHERE THE BIRD GOES after he flies down.
If he flies down and goes down the hammock a certain direction, that is where you want to set up opening morning. Turkeys are very routine, and will do the same thing for the most part each day.
Sorta like patterning a deer
Also if you ever see a gobbler strutting, see what kind of terrain he is strutting in. Some birds like pastures, some like an open pine row.
The birds up by me like to strut in an open area inside an oak hammock.
So if you can find where the turkey goes, and a strut area, you found a good spot.
Also look for tracks, scat and strut marks in sandy places. Strut marks can sometimes be confused with cat scratching![]()
Wow thanks great advice
Day break pre-season use a locator call as a gobbler, crow even a whistle will work.Hit areas you have seen birds doing so early gives you an idea of roosting's and as ILUV2HUNT said pattern and set up just like deer hunting. While walking around try to spot roost trees you will see plenty of scat feathers and other scratchings around near where they drop. Also look for sign on the tree itself you will see scat many times off of limbs and the side of the tree. When you walk and find dustings mark the area in your mind because birds will use these over and over again.A big plus is to dress in camo and move just like putting on a stalk for a bedded buck try to never bust the birds.I even liked to take a tree seat with me and set up prior spots so they are ready when needed.(take seat out with you)These birds are smart so if you do make a mistake in busting some watch what they do and move away from them dont try and follow and give that spot a rest. While I am out walking I will randomly use my locator call and sometimes you will get several birds to answer if that happens do not pressure call them as they will only be out smarted once. Also if you have several birds from different areas coming in be careful listen they may walk a long distance at times before sounding so a good eye is needed.Plus if you do find active birds wanting to come to your call work the birds and learn but allow the birds to work themselves also. This way you have less chance of spooking them.Once you have worked birds slowly move out and let the spot rest allowing the birds to get back to their routine.Once the opener is there you can usually get right back on the birds unless they have been busted by pressure.Think slow when hunting turkey their eyes will get you!
