do you start calling in the morning? should I wait for full sun up or should I start with the waning light?
I usually wait till I hear other hens in the area then give a couple light tree yelps. I'll wait till I either hear him fly down or till I think he should have already then I hit him with a fly down cackle along with simulated wing beats.
Overall it depends on what is happening and where I am hunting. Our birds seem to fly down sometimes later then other sub species of birds I have hunted like Merriam's with fly down as soon as they can see the ground under the roost.
I'm the same way. I usually try to imitate the hens around me. Can't go wrong by trying to match what is natural sounding to them.
Same here. I don't even attempt to call until all the birds are chirping and I have listened for a while. Then it is a series of very soft tree yelps. Around flydown time I let loose a flydown cackle pretty loud and sit back n listen.
After that its pretty much clucks n purrs only. All depends on how it all plays out
Worst thing you can do is over call. If a bird is around, he has heard you
