eeewww...you might'a got wet today.
Well, we had a pretty good weekend except for the rain that we got all day Sunday. We got there Friday afternoon and were able to do a little scouting that evening to see if we might be able to locate any birds. All evening we never heard a bird with all of the costing that we did. I did think that I might have heard a bird fly up down in the bottom where a small creek ran through and had planned to start there the first thing on Saturday morning. We got up Saturday morning at 5:30 and went our separate ways. I wanted to get a good ear on the area that I thought that I heard a bird fly up the night before. I worked my way down to the creek and was there at daylight waiting for the conformation that I was expecting. Since there was rain earlier that week there was water flowing in the 6' wide stream. All a sudden I heard something walking in the water towards me and as it rounds the bend of the creek I had just enough daylight to tell that it was two beavers. they came within 6-8' of me and then stopped, I started messing with them when I realize that these things might be mean and good lords knows that I didn't want to get bit by one of these things cause they have got some teeth. Well they went their own way and I heard nothing else that morning covering the entire south end of this lease and never saw a track or heard a peep. At around 9:00 I heard a shot from the north end and knew that my buddy had found what I not been able to. I started to make the mile long trek to the camp up and down hills. Sure enough when we met up at the camp he had killed a bird and he said that he heard 4 other birds that morning also. Sunday morning we had finally found out where the birds were at and we doubled up to see if we could work on one for me. After walking for about an hour we walked up on a bird that gobbled back at us. Not 5 minutes we heard another on in the other direction that seemed hotter than the first one that we had heard. We get set up and ready to work him and started too work him. He had gobbled about 5 times and the bottom fell out... Rain, we left and never got a chance to go back the rest of the day due to rain. Monday Morning rolls around and we set out for a short hunt before we have to head back. We already knew where the birds were at and knew that we could get pretty close without having to walk so dang far. We got there before daylight and waited to hear one fire off so we could close the distance. We heard two birds and decided to split up and work a bird each. I set out on the one to the right and Mike took the one on the left. My Bird sounded to be somewhere in the ¼ mile distance so I went about 200 yards not to push him and set up. The first yelp he fired back at me, I yelped again and he wasted no time replying. I waited 30 minutes and heard nothing and just knew that he was closing the distance. After 40 minutes nothing and I was hoping that he would gobble to let me know where her was at. Finally he gobbled and had not moved any at all. I jumped up and moved quickly another 100 yards and set up again. As soon as I yelped he fired up gobbling 6-7 times and got quite. I’m thinking that he is finally closing the distance so I’m all eyes everywhere and moving as slow as possible. Then I made the mistake! I purred lightly once and easily turned my head to the right and he putt not 20 yards in front of me just behind a blown over pine tree. I was watching the mowed path so closely that I never saw him slip up behind the blown over pine. Looking back on things If I had shot through the dead pine I would have probably got him but I don’t shot at something unless there is a wide open shot. 3 days in Ga. 1 bird but I still had a great time. The one bird had 11” beard and 1 ¼” spurs.
