upper hills is a great piece of woods imo. i will try n make it out there a couple times at least but usually wait till it clears out a bit. by the third week your out there with 20 people maybe.
I was out there yesterday. I setup my blind on the last day of small game in anticipation of turkey. I got there a little after 4 and got permit number 22. I didn't hear a thing in the morning and was too exhausted to stay late. I think I did more sleeping in that blind than I did calling... I saw those guys you were talking about and the feather on your windshield... I thought to myself.. man those guys are just rubbing it in...
Woody is the guy at the check station. He said there were only about 50 something people in there yesterday... Go figure. Last year he had to turn people away, but this year he didn't even hand out all 75 permits... I might try again later in the season...
Just got a call from my uncle. He was heading to Greenswamp, but running late. So he decided to hunt Hillsborough instead. He managed to shoot a 19.5lber with a 10in beard at 10:30. He said he never heard a gobble all morning. He spied a couple of hens feeding in an opening, and started talking with them after setting up a blind. They headed his way, and just happened to have a strutting gobbler in tow. When he took a long shot for his 1100 40yds, and he piled up, after thrashing himself to death for a few mins.
Yea Allen I went to that area on Sunday and thats where I was going to but the other guys were there first. Congrats to your uncle city slicker thats a great bird anywhere. Kortsman I was under the impression that it was full, I guess I misheard him. I do know that almost everyone was cleared out early. It seems like to me in a couple of weeks with it only being open during the week that it will be less pressured than alot of leases I have been on. Thats what Im hoping for anyway. Also Greenswamp is right down the road and it gets pretty hammered on the weekends but during the week its pretty much empty.
Based on where those guys were and the feather on your winshield, that area is really nice. I killed a nice hog in that general block a few years back. But it gets hammered during deer season. The firebreak you were on is a nice area especially when it gets wet in there...Pretty dry now... I'm definately going out there again before the season ends. Hopefully during my daughters spring break when I take some time off... The pressure should be way less by then.
