My primary hunting gun is the Savage .270 with the accutrigger. Make sure she shoulders it right and she'll be fine. I'm actually thinking about going to my .243 this year though.
I can't say enough good things about the 7mm08. for a short action size that uses little powder and developes fairly low pressures you get excelent velocity/accuracy/stopping power and low recoil. good selection of rifle types from varmint grade to ultra light carbine lengths. I've had my mdl 7 (18" bbl) since 1984 and when I had a large selection of rifles to choose from it's the 1 that I almost always took and never regreted it. having loaded and shot thousands of rounds thru it from 120gr-175 gr I never had a load that wasn't under 1 moa, usualy much less and if I had a higher power scope, groups would be much smaller. (mine wears a 1.5x5 leupold) my current poor shooting is a result of my hand/wrist/elbow troubles, and flat point bullets I'm sure. it's the only big bore I kept when I sold all others and it's hard to find another caliber that will best it SIGNIFICANTLY without a lot of extra bbl length, wt, recoil, pressure, powder consumption, bbl wear and cost. I'm surprized he is going to part with it. hurry and get it before he wakes up and changes his mind. not trying to DIS the 243,270,30-06 or 308, all great calibers but the 7mm08 will out perform some and come almost as close to others that theres no GREAT difference. my only sugestions would be to get good glass on it and invest in bbl/action/trigger/bedding/ job and recoil pad and look forwars to 1/4-1/2" groups as a norm. put a custom bbl/trigger on one and watch out.
She loved the 270 i borrowed from my boss, ofcourse she didnt feel too much recoil because of the puss pad, but thats fine. I myself am considering buying a 7mm-08, and i would keep it down here in FL, i left my 30.06 up in NY. Anyways, im trying to save up to buy one.
