Oh hell yeah that's madness! Surely there is a closer no quota wma? Lots of them only have quotas for the first 9 days. Some, like green swamp, have a huge number of "first come first serve" quotas after the first 9 days.

Yes, I hunt a WMA close to home (Green Swamp). The only reason I’m looking at the trips is because I can’t stay away from the woods, is my way to escape the madness of work. Besides, there is no hunting on any Central Zone WMA during the summer. I’m trying to make my public land hunting a year round affair, where I can hunt at least once a month, and I’m almost there. This past season I was in the woods from mid-September to end of April. If I figure this thing out, and I’m willing to spend a few $$$, I think I can hunt at least once a month during the “off season”. My plan this year is to start hunting the south zone late August (Corbertt WMA), then move to the central (zone B) and then hunt north. I guess if I stay with my plan I can hunt public land year round and I’ll break my record from last season. :wacko
I look at it like an investment in my sanity. There is no price too high or distance too far to travel to keep it. I don't get caught up in the type of game or the kill even. That doesn't make it a successful trip for me. Getting out, getting away, having a good time with friends and family, these are the ways I measure my hunting success.

X2 That is why I hunt.
anything further than Texas IMO MIGHT be too far, although I hear hunting hogs in California and Hawaii is good. I have a cousin who is slaying them in New Zealand.
Not crazy at all. Although I thought the same thing about myself. Me and a buddy are probably doing the same trip the weekend of June 5th. Almost 800 miles round trip for us. But why not! If I can get out in the woods and forget about work and the real world for just a bit then it's worth it. More power to ya bud!!!
