if were talking plain unplated lead buckshot, I could see it might foul the rifeling and dirty it up some, don't know about doing any serious harm I have my concealed carry permit and carry 24/7 basicly anyway maybe I'll just stick with 2 guns. as we say in N.Y. one is none. a N.Y. reload, a BUG (back up gun )would be handy if chased up a tree,or the scope got dropped in muddy water or otherwise dirtied up. thats one reason I always bring along 2 guns, be it rifle or shotgun, one scoped one un-scoped

I don't think it will hurt it none, but it will spiral the load and be very inaccurate.

I did not know the answer either. I did a quick search, and the general consensus is it is a no-no. It seems to leave a big "donut" hole in the pattern, which gets worse with distance. Also fouls the rifling very bad
Here is one forum blog about it

crock, that setup I saw you using seems pretty good. a low powered scope on a smoothbore 12 ga, can interchange slugs or buckshot. I haven't shot slugs thru a smoothbore in decades. how does it group 4" at 50 yds?
