I have been looking into a AR as well for hunting. I have read differing opinions on the .223 for hunting. Your selection of bullet and shot location obviously did the job. At what range did you drop him?

About 40 yds.
Regardless of caliber, bullet selection, and shot placement are top priorities. I am a huge fan of Barnes TSX bullets. I shoot them in every gun I own now. My second choice would be Nosler partitions. They set the standard for cup & core bullets.
For me, I am a neck shooter when feasible and practical. I like the one and done approach.

I still have reservations about taking a body shot on big hogs with this caliber. Its not the fact that the bullet is not doing damage...its the fact that the entrance/exit is small diameter. So if the hog doesn't drop, the fat on a hog will seal the hole up and they are gonna be hard to blood trail.

That was my next question. I am the 1st to admit I am not the best shot but practicing when I can. I prefer the heart/lung are for shots. If you didn't hit it in the neck or lung/heart because of movement or just a bad shot would it get the job done? I am thinking about deer specifically, do you feel could you track it?
