I had the bright idea the other day that I don't have enough critters around here. Lol. I mean snakes, rats, meat chickens, layer hens, turkeys, dogs isn't enough. Decided I wanted some rabbits. SO, I ripped down my original chicken coop last week and had a bunch of lumber from it. Rabbit pen project began on Friday from the leftovers.. I got the frame and roof built, and went to Lowe's to get welded wire. I then realized it was going to cost me a fortune in wire, plus wire rings and crimpers, time, and frustration. So I got on the www and found some pre-made rabbit cages for sale for much cheaper than I could build them
Emailed the guy and set a time to go get them today. Load the boy up and make a road trip North to get them.. I got to the gate and called the guy..he said. "Open the gate, close it behind you to keep the goat in, come up to the house, park there, get on the golf cart and come way back here to the back barn". Lmao,ok.....
Got on the golf cart and 3 huge labs joined us for the ride. Met the dude at the barn where he was doing whatever, got an 8' cage, which I loaded on the golf cart, the 3 labs got back on with us and off I go ...
Get home and make a couple calls on some rabbit leads. Finally a lady calls me back and off we go again. An hour later I am back with 3 rabbits. I wanted to get more, but the little girl got cold feet and didn't want to get rid of any more. Not sure what the hell I'm gonna do with them, but I got them.
Goats coming next. I mentioned it to the wife and she just shook her head and walked away.
Good eats! We raised rabbits years ago. We had around a dozen breeders and would butcher every 3 months or so. Have fun with it.
My father-in-law raised rabbits when he was alive. We ate some good BBQ and fried rabbit when we'd go see him. I'd like to have a place big enough for rabbits and chickens and a big garden. Not too sure about goats though. The males are nasty critters.
What happened to all your laying hens?
What happened to all your laying hens?
Put it to you this way. I've said it on here a hundred times. If there is a flaw in your coop build, a predator will find it. All my hens got killed a few months back, except for one sole survivor. She had basically quit laying due to age, but figured I'd give her an honorary spot here. I got 4 new hens after the slaughter (and I fixed the spot the predators were breaking in). They were the nastiest broads I have ever seen. They killed my remaining one hen the first day.
I've since built a new coop, got rid of those 4, and got new layers that I raised from day old chicks. Now starting to lay. I'm rethinking the goat deal the more I read about it..... :no
