his could be our first real Gulf storm..One I have been dreading here in Destin.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

We lived up there in Fort Walton Beach and went through two storms that hit in '95, Erin and Opal. Erin was a small Cat 1, just knocked down a bunch of weak trees, damaged bad roofs and caused some small power outages. Opal was worse, but since Erin cleaned out a bunch of weak stuff earlier in the season, when Opal hit there was less damage than it could have caused. Opal did flatten all the huge sand dunes on the barrier islands, and wiped out Hwy 98 from Destin to FWB. That was before the midbay bridge was built, so people living in Destin but working on Eglin AFB, or in FWB, or vice versa, had to drive down to the 331 and go through Freeport and Niceville. There were boats and debris covering Hwy 98 in FWB along the sound. Lots of fun!

Actually, I don't have to run a cord thru the house. The washer and dryer are in the garage, and I have an outlet in the wall outside to plug the gen into, and the cord/plug is always right behind the dryer waiting to be plugged in. The biggest hassle, if you can call it that, is pulling the dryer out and reaching over/back there to switch plugs.

Was walking through Home Depot the other day and noticed they had a prewired outlet for generators. Backfeeding through the dryer outlet works great just have to deal with a cord through the house.

Ain't nothing wrong with the set up you got at the dryer. Just remember to shut off the main to the power co. so you don't backfeed the power lines on the poles. 1st time you light up a lineman working in your neighborhood you'll be waiting a while to get power back on. I put a 50 amp outlet at my meter main and backfeed a 16 kw generator and can run just about anything I need. :rockon
