The attack on Pearl Harbor was the opening of a big can of whoop-ass! If I ever visit Hawaii, visiting the Arizona Memorial is first on my list of things to do. We landed at Hickam AFB back in 1986 while coming back from a TDY (temporary duty) to Korea. We were only supposed to be there for about an hour so they could refuel and change crews. We weren't allowed to leave the terminal, and ended up being stuck there for 11 hours because of an engine problem. Sucked being so close to Pearl Harbor, the memorials, etc. and not being allowed to go see them.

This is a common occurence at overseas locations. The crew will typically make sure there is a problem before landing. This allows them to get out and visit the area and enjoy the location. When I was stationed in Germany, we had alot of cargo planes that would stop to refuel and would have something "broken" and couldn't take off till it was fixed. Some of the maintaince would take a couple of days also allowing these guys to get perdium.

Don't want to derail the thread, but that stuff happens everywhere that is worth visiting, here or overseas. Planes rarely break down in Minot, ND or Clovis, NM but always break in Hawaii, Vegas, Tampa, etc.
Sorry for the derail, now back to remembering what happened 70 years ago.
