That will live in infamy" Pearl Harbor day. Not many of them old timers left. Losing more and more WWII vets every day. If you know one , take the time to listen to some of the stories ( if they will tell you some)
Kinda miss pulling into port at Pearl.. Was always kinda cool. Would pass right by the Arizona. My old ship is parked right over there now also.
the MINNOW is in pearl? J.K. BIG MO has some serious history to her. was she the longest actively commissioned ship? my Godfather "Jellybean" was serving prior to Pearl patroling the E. coast and they captured a German vessel the Odenwald (disquised as an American commercial ship) 2 weeks before Pearl Harbor and before war was declared. when they reached Puerto Rico the sailors collected money to take the prisoners out to the bars to get drunk, then caught holy hell after pearl was hit and war was declared. do a search of the odenwald and you will see a group pic of US sailors on board her, he is in the front row.
My grandfather turned 91 back in June. Still independent as all get out and still drives himself around (watch out!!). He was in the Navy before Pearl, but don't let anyone tell you the U.S. wasn't in the war before that point. Especially convoys running the North Atlantic to Mermansk, Russia......tons of guys and ships went to the bottom up there before the official entry into the war, mainly merchants.
I have one grandfather left.. He served under Patton as a tank driver in Europe.. I enjoy listening to his stories.
Nacho, actually the USS Arizona is still an active Navy vessel. Still on the books. The "Big Mo" was bad azzz though. Alot of history on that ship. Glad i had the priviledge to serve on her.
they filmed an episode of the new Hawaii five-o on her this year. imo they should anchor her off the coast of Somalia as a pirate deterrent and base of operations. one of those big ol cannon balls into one of those pirate speedboats would be nice to see.
